Writing a rule and a quick step into server programming (continued)

Although programming does take some work to learn, this might be a great project to start with. Most ISPs provide a PHP or Perl application interface for their Web server, and this is a very simple, easy to define project. There are a bunch of great books for learning PHP, but I particularly recommend O'Reilly's PHP Hacks and PHP in a Nutshell books.

PHP in a Nutshell
Let's start with PHP in a Nutshell, by Paul Hudson. This book is a comprehensive reference to the PHP environment, and includes many library calls. It's clear and provides a good reference summary for most of what you'll want to do with PHP.

OUR RATING: 4 of 5

PHP Hacks
We love the O'Reilly Hacks series and PHP Hacks, by Jack D. Herrington is no different. This book specifically shows 100 individual hacks that'll help you get more out of PHP. It's got a hack about scraping an HTML page, another about managing HTML email, and yet another about sending IMs using PHP, all of which might apply to Mark's project.

OUR RATING: 4 of 5

PHP: Your visual blueprint for creating open source, server-side content
It's funny. PHP: Your visual blueprint for creating open source, server-side content, by Paul Whitehead and Joel Desamero, has an enormous title and yet is part of the Visual Read Less -- Learn More series of books. Fortunately, the title is the most cumbersome aspect of this book, published by Wiley.

For all intents and purposes, this is a great cookbook of how to accomplish specific PHP procedures, each procedure taking a page. This book won't explicitly show you how to solve your email project problem, but it will get you past a number of challenges with PHP. We hate the title, but love the book.

OUR RATING: 5 of 5

Perl Core Language Little Black Book
Perl Core Language Little Black Book, by Steve Holzner and published by Paraglyph Press, is another great book with a long, painful title. If you want to get started learning Perl, this book is one of the more comprehensive you'll find. It provides brief discussions and then comprehensive solutions to programming problems you might have.

If you haven't looked at Perl, it's initially a very wacky language. It's often very hard to read, but exceptionally easy to write. It's also most likely the most popular server programming language and there are libraries to do just about anything you could possibly want. It'll have a higher learning curve than some of the other languages -- well, that's not strictly true. It's probably about as easy to learn, but it will take a long time to master.

OUR RATING: 4 of 5

Python Cookbook
Python Cookbook, by Alex Martelli, Anna Martelli Ravenscroft, and David Ascher is deep collection of Python "recipes" for accomplishing specific tasks. Python is a structured programming language that's quite elegant and clear to understand. It also has a reputation for very rapid prototyping and programming of complex, yet maintainable projects. There are a number of articles in the book specifically about managing emails. We really like this book. If you're going to slither around with Python, Python Cookbook needs to be on your shelf.
