You Perform gives you fifteen powerful add-ins for Outlook (continued)

The Auto CC/BCC add-in automatically sends copies of messages or blind copies of messages to the recipient listed, according to the rules specified. Some of you Donald Trump Apprentice Wannabees out there might kill for this add-in, but I'm not sure this isn't playing with fire.

Just the name of this particular add-in, shown in Figure F, makes me sigh.

Just like some of the other add-ins, you know this was an add-in requested by some user, secretary, or network administrator who had a problem manager. You know the type: the guy who won't read or respond to his own emails and needs them printed out. That sort of person just gives me the shudders.

To be fair, there are some non-Peter Principle uses for this tool. If you subscribe to a fax service that mails your faxes to you, having something that automatically prints out the emails could be useful. Likewise, if you're involved in some sort of project that requires legal paper documentation for every action, having a tool to automatically print received messages can be a win.

But those uses are a rarity. Personally, I'd would have liked any user who turns on this feature to be required sign a formal statement agreeing to plant a tree before the feature became available for use.

Eliminate duplicates
The Eliminate Duplicates add-in, shown in Figure G, is another powerful tool that requires care.

Eliminate Duplicates will remove duplicate email messages, duplicate contacts and duplicate appointments. This is generally a useful thing, but again, use care because you might have had a use for those duplicate entries and there's often a lot of mail in folders that you haven't seen in a while.

I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this add-in. I expected it to take a very long time to scan a folder of email messages, but I ran it against a folder of over 3,500 messages and it took less than two minutes. That's impressive.

Forward reminders
The Forward Reminders add-in, shown in Figure H, can be pretty useful for the less responsible or more frazzled among us.

Assuming you keep Outlook open and running on your desktop when you're out of the office, the Forward Reminders add-in can send a reminder message via email to your pager or cell phone. This is cool, because how often have we forgotten something important and a reminder would have helped?

Hide fax numbers
I'll be honest. I don't have a need for the Hide Fax Numbers add-in, shown in Figure I.

FIGURE I

Don't show all those fax numbers. Click picture for a larger image.

That's because I don't have that many contacts or address book records containing fax numbers. I'm pretty much an email-only kinda guy. But, if you do have a ton of fax contact entries, this add-in could help. Normally, when you Select Names for an email from your addresses, if there are contacts with fax numbers, you'll see the fax number entries in addition to entries for the email addresses themselves.
